About this lesson

Who it is for. Elementary students who use and, but and because accurately and the past simple for stories. They confuse cause and result (I was hungry because I ate a sandwich), don't use so, and tell stories as lists with and then and then.

Everything the lesson needs is on this page: the language analysis, the timed stages with the teacher's own words and instruction-checking questions, the differentiation, the printable handouts and the answer key.

Aims

Main aim. To clarify and practise because (reason) vs so (result), and sequencing words (first, then, next, after that, finally) to organise a short past narrative.

Learning outcome. By the end of the lesson, students can tell and write a short story in order with reasons and results, e.g. First, my alarm didn't ring, so I woke up late. Then I missed the bus because I couldn't find my shoes. Finally, I got to school at 9.

  • Subsidiary aim. To practise the past simple in stories.
  • Subsidiary aim. To practise punctuation with so and sequencers.
  • Subsidiary aim. To develop speaking and writing through a picture story.

Language analysis

What to know before the lesson: the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language, and the problems learners usually have with it.

because vs so

FormExample
because + reasonresult + because + reasonI was late because I missed the bus.
so + resultreason + , so + resultI missed the bus, so I was late.

because vs so: notes

  • Same situation, opposite order: the reason comes after because and before so.
  • A comma usually goes before so.

Sequencing words

OrderWordsPunctuation
beginningFirst, / First of all, comma after
middleThen / Next, / After that, comma after Next and After that (optional after Then)
endFinally, / In the end, comma after

Sequencing words: notes

  • Don't repeat and then in every sentence; vary the words.

Pronunciation

  • Pause after sequencers: First, | my alarm didn't ring.
  • so is stressed when it introduces an important result: ..., SO I was late.

Concept-checking questions

  • I missed the bus, so I was late. What happened first: I missed the bus or I was late? (I missed the bus.) What was the result? (I was late.)
  • I was late because I missed the bus. Why was I late? (Because I missed the bus.) Is this the same situation? (Yes.)

Anticipated problems and solutions

CEFR A2 · 60 minutes · Teenagers and adults

Procedure: So vs Because, and Sequencing Words, step by step

Warm-up5 minutes · Pairs, whole class

Aim: To engage students with the topic.

Ask: "Have you ever had a really bad day? What happened?"

Pairs share (2 minutes). Take one or two stories.

Presentation20 minutes · Individual, pairs, whole class

Aim: To present so, because and sequencers in a story and clarify meaning and punctuation.

Part A: Reading (6 minutes)

Give out Handout 1. Say: "Read about Kavindu's terrible day. Put the pictures in order. Three minutes."

Pairs compare. Students answer the questions. Check as a class.

Part B: Noticing (4 minutes)

Say: "Find so and because in the story. Underline the reason in red and the result in blue." Pairs compare.

Part C: Clarification (10 minutes)

Board I missed the bus, so I was late. and I was late because I missed the bus. Draw the arrow diagram. Ask the CCQs.

Highlight the comma before so.

Build the sequencing ladder from the story. Show how they help the reader.

Board I was hungry because I ate a sandwich ✗. Ask: "Is this logical?" Correct it.

Pronunciation. Drill with a pause after sequencers.

Controlled practice10 minutes · Individual, then pairs, then whole class

Aim: To practise the forms accurately.

Give out Handout 2. Say: "Exercise A: so or because? Exercise B: rewrite with the other word. Exercise C: put the story in order. Seven minutes."

Pairs check. Check as a class.

Freer practice18 minutes · Pairs, then groups, then whole class

Aim: To tell and write a story using the linking words.

Picture story (8 minutes). Give out Handout 3. Pairs look at six pictures of Malsha's day at the beach and tell the story using sequencers, so and because.

ICQs: "How many sequencing words must you use?" (At least four.)

My terrible day (6 minutes). Students tell a partner about a real or imaginary bad day with at least two so and two because.

Write (4 minutes). Students write their story in five or six sentences. Two read theirs aloud.

Monitor and note errors.

Feedback and wrap-up7 minutes · Whole class

Aim: To give feedback and consolidate.

Board four sentences from your notes (two with errors). Students correct them.

Quick chain: one student says a sentence with so; the next continues with because.

Set the homework.

Homework Write the story of your best or worst day (100 words). Use First, Then, After that, Finally, and so and because at least twice each.

PPP (presentation, practice, production). Stage times add up to 60 minutes.

Differentiation

Support
Give weaker students the arrow diagram. In the picture story, give them the verbs for each picture.
Stretch
Stronger students use before and after + -ing or clause: After I had breakfast, I ... They use as a result and that's why.

Adapting the lesson

ForWhat to change
A large class (40 or more)Keep the pairwork in "Freer practice" in fixed pairs rather than a mingle, and take feedback from four or five pairs instead of the whole room. Run "Picture story" once, with two pairs reporting, rather than hearing every pair. Monitor one half of the room during "Controlled practice" and the other half during "Freer practice".
A class with no photocopierPut the exercises from Handout 2: Practice on the board for learners to copy into their notebooks, and read any text aloud twice instead of printing it. The board plan above is this lesson's minimum - with that on the board, it runs on no paper at all.
An online classSend Handouts 1 to 3 in the chat before the lesson and put the board plan on a shared slide. Use breakout rooms for "Picture story" and visit each room once. Have learners type the controlled answers in the chat, so you see every answer at once instead of nominating.
A different age groupWith young learners, cut the writing at the end and give that time to the speaking task; keep the drilling short, and let them draw or mime where the plan allows it. With adults, keep the writing and ask for a short spoken summary in place of anything drawn or mimed.

Checking learning

10 out of 12 or better on Handout 2, Exercises A and B. In their stories, students use so for results and because for reasons. Students use at least four different sequencing words.

Teacher's reflection

Did the arrow diagram help with so and because? Were the stories more organised than in Stage 1?

Handout 1: Kavindu's Terrible Day

Name: ______________________________ Date: ______________

Last Monday was a terrible day for Kavindu.

First, his alarm didn't ring, so he woke up late. Then he couldn't find his shoes because his little sister hid them! After that, he ran to the bus stop, but the bus left without him, so he took a tuk-tuk.

At school, the teacher was angry because Kavindu was 30 minutes late. Next, he had a maths test, and he didn't do well because he was very tired.

Finally, he got home and his mother said, "Surprise! It's pizza for dinner!" So the day ended well after all.

Answer the questions.

  • Why did Kavindu wake up late? ______________________________
  • Why couldn't he find his shoes? ______________________________
  • How did he get to school? ______________________________
  • Why didn't he do well in the test? ______________________________

Handout 2: Practice

C. Put the story in order (1–4).

___ Then I put the flour, sugar and eggs in a bowl. ___ Finally, we ate the cake with my family. ___ First, I went to the shop and bought eggs. ___ After that, I baked it for 40 minutes.
