Conversation Partner
Choose a situation and talk. The website plays the other person: it listens to what you say and answers you. If it doesn't understand, it asks you to say it again, just as a real person would.
Choose a conversation
How to practise
- Open Useful phrases before you start, and read them aloud once.
- Speak in full sentences, and be polite: Could I..., I'd like..., please and thank you.
- If you get stuck, press Show an example.
- When you can do a conversation easily, switch off Show what to say at each turn and try again.
- Use Chrome, Edge or Safari. In other browsers you can type your replies instead.
About the conversation partner
Does the website understand everything I say?
No. Each conversation is a script written by RCF English that branches on the words you use: for example, if you ask for coffee, the barista gives you coffee. It covers the replies a learner is likely to give, but it does not understand free conversation and it does not correct your grammar.
Can I practise playing a part in a written conversation?
Yes. On the Spoken English page, each conversation has Take a part and speak it buttons: the website speaks the other person's lines and listens for yours.
Where does my voice go?
Speech recognition is done by your browser. Chrome and Edge send the audio to Google, and Safari sends it to Apple. RCF English never receives your voice or your words. See the privacy policy.
