About these songs

Grade 1 and Grade 2 share one syllabus, Activity Based Oral English, and each of its themes uses songs to teach words and sentence patterns. Each song here goes with one of those themes, so it works in Grade 1 as well.

The tunes are traditional and very old, so they are free for anyone to use. The words of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star were written by Jane Taylor in 1806. The words of the other four were written for RCF English.

each morning and each night.

This is how I drink my milk,

Five short steps

Teaching a song

  1. Listen first

Play the tune once while the children just listen and watch the words light up.

  2. Say the words

Press Say the words, or say them yourself, slowly, a line at a time. Children repeat each line.

  3. Sing slowly

Tick Slower and sing along. Point to the words as they light up.

  4. Add actions

Wave for hello, wiggle fingers for twinkle, rub hands for wash. Actions help children remember the words.

  5. Sing it again

Untick Slower once the song is known. Children love singing a song they know well - repeat it on later days.

About the sound

The tune is played as soft, quiet notes made by the browser itself - there are no audio files to download. Nothing plays until you press a button, and the sound switch at the top of the songs turns it off.

The tune has no singing voice. The children do the singing. That is what makes it an action song rather than a video to watch.
