A/L Literature

Advanced Level Literature taught as a set of abilities to be built: close reading, evidence, effect, argument and essay organisation.

What the course covers

  • The prescribed texts, read whole in the first term and then studied closely across the two years.
  • Critical appreciation of unseen poems and passages — one a fortnight, timed, because this skill improves only with repetition.
  • Selecting evidence — going straight to the two or three moments that answer a question.
  • Analysing effect — the sentence most candidates never write, and where the higher marks live.
  • Developing an argument — qualifying, complicating and meeting the strongest objection.
  • Critical approaches, used as questions to ask a text rather than labels to attach to it.
  • Examination technique — choosing questions, dividing time, and the final ten minutes.
