Advanced Level Literature taught as a set of abilities to be built: close reading, evidence, effect, argument and essay organisation.

What the course covers

The prescribed texts, read whole in the first term and then studied closely across the two years.
Critical appreciation of unseen poems and passages — one a fortnight, timed, because this skill improves only with repetition.
Selecting evidence — going straight to the two or three moments that answer a question.
Analysing effect — the sentence most candidates never write, and where the higher marks live.
Developing an argument — qualifying, complicating and meeting the strongest objection.
Critical approaches, used as questions to ask a text rather than labels to attach to it.
Examination technique — choosing questions, dividing time, and the final ten minutes.
