Grade 9 Literature

The year to build the habits that make the Ordinary Level course straightforward: reading closely, finding evidence, and explaining an effect.

What the course covers

Grade 9 is where Literature is either enjoyed or given up on. The course is built to make it the first.

  • Reading a poem — who is speaking, what changes, and what the words are doing.
  • Reading a short story — where it begins, where it turns, and what the ending leaves open.
  • Reading a play — following it as something watched rather than only read.
  • Finding evidence — going back to the text instead of answering from memory.
  • Explaining an effect — the sentence that turns a description into an answer.
  • Writing a paragraph answer — point, evidence, explanation, effect and link, practised until it is a habit.

Grade 9 Literature

An introduction to reading literature closely: poetry, short stories and drama, with the habits that make the Ordinary Level years easier. Students learn to find evidence in a text, explain an effect and build an answer rather than retell a story.

Why start at Grade 9

Most students who struggle at Ordinary Level are not short of ability. They arrive in Grade 10 having read texts but never having been shown how an answer is built, and then spend two years trying to learn that under examination pressure.

A year spent on the habits first makes the two that follow much easier.
