The word-and-meaning cards fold in half, with the meaning printed upside down on the lower half so it reads the right way once folded. Typed words stay on your own device.

Eight games that use the cards

1. Flash and say (whole class, 5 minutes)

Hold up a word card for one second, then hide it. The class says the word together. Speed up as they improve. Use large word-only cards.

2. Meaning race (teams, 10 minutes)

Read a meaning aloud. The first team to hold up or say the matching word scores. With fold cards, the meaning side faces you and the word faces the class, so you never need a list.

3. Pairs (groups of four, 10 minutes)

Print a set twice, once word-only and once as fold cards cut into two halves. Cards face down; students turn two over and keep them if the word matches its meaning.

4. Missing card (whole class, 5 minutes)

Stick eight cards on the board. Students close their eyes; remove one. The first to name the missing word comes out and removes the next one.

5. Stand up if (whole class, 5 minutes)

Give every student a card. Call a category: stand up if your word is a feeling or stand up if your verb is irregular. Those standing say their word.

6. Sentence builder (pairs, 10 minutes)

Each pair draws three cards and writes one sentence using all three words. The best sentences are read aloud. Works well with linking words.

7. Hot seat (teams, 10 minutes)

One student sits facing the class with their back to the board. A card is shown to the class, who explain the word without saying it. The student in the seat guesses.

8. Line up (groups, 5 minutes)

For irregular verbs or linking words, give each student a card and have groups arrange themselves: base form next to past form, or first, then, finally in order.
