A marking scheme is the most useful document in revision — and the most misused.
Marking schemes and copyright
An official marking scheme belongs to the body that produced it. RCF English publishes one only where the copyright holder has given permission, and otherwise links to the official source where the official source publishes it.
Marking guidance written by RCF English is original material and is published freely. It is clearly distinguished from any official scheme.

How to use a marking scheme
- Write the answer first. A marking scheme read before the attempt teaches nothing, because you cannot then see what you would have done.
- Mark against it honestly. Being generous to yourself is the commonest self-marking error and the most expensive.
- Look at what it rewards, not only at the answers. A scheme tells you what examiners are looking for — content points, structure, accuracy, appropriateness — and that information transfers to every other question.
- Do not memorise scheme answers. They are answers to that question, not templates.
- Notice where marks are cheap. Most schemes contain marks for things like correct form and complete answers, which cost nothing but attention.
