What is in here

There are 25 games here across 10 topics, about 1.6 hours of play in all, covering ten topics for a learner who can already say simple things: jobs, places in town, daily routines, hobbies and sport, prepositions, a/an/the, pronouns, question words, spelling and the simple present.

The level is CEFR A1-A2. Everything is free, needs no account, and works on a phone.

What it practises

  • First grammar, as games rather than rules. Articles, pronouns and prepositions are met here as choices to be made, not as tables to be memorised.
  • Question words - who, what, where, when, why, how - which are what let a learner start a conversation instead of only answering one.
  • Spelling, which at this level is where most of a learner's written mistakes actually live.

Getting the most from it

Nine of the twenty-five games at this level ask a learner to supply a missing word rather than choose one. Those are the hard ones and the useful ones: leave them until the topic's easier games are comfortable.

What comes after this level

Pre-intermediate follows: the simple past, sentence building and short reading passages.

This is also the point where games alone stop being enough. A learner at this level should be writing something, however short, and the ESL worksheets are free, printable and have answer keys.
