Literature Orientation: One-Month Course for New Teachers

A one-month online course for teachers who are new to English Literature, or who have been asked to take a Literature class for the first time.

What the course is

A one-month orientation course, conducted online by Rohana Fernando, for teachers coming to English Literature for the first time.

Its purpose is practical. A teacher who has not taught Literature before is usually confident about the texts and unsure about everything else: how to plan the lesson, what to do with a poem for forty minutes, and how to mark an answer fairly and usefully. The course works through those questions in order.

What the course covers

  • Planning a Literature lesson — what belongs in one lesson, and what should be left for the next.
  • Teaching a poem, a short story and a play — how each is approached differently, and why.
  • Reading a text with a class — reading it whole first, then studying it closely.
  • Showing students how an answer is built — point, evidence, explanation, effect and link, and how to teach it rather than name it.
  • Context and essay questions — what each asks for, and how long an answer should be.
  • Marking written work — correcting individually, with one clear instruction rather than a page of red.
  • Helping students who are struggling, without singling them out in front of the class.

Who it is for

  • Teachers new to teaching English Literature.
  • Teachers of English asked to take a Literature class for the first time.
  • Teachers returning to Literature after a long gap who would like a structured refresher.
  • Trainee and probationary teachers preparing to take a Literature class.
