Five stories

1. The Dry Well

New words: well, bucket, cloud

Last year there was no rain for many weeks.

The well in our garden was almost dry.

My father took a bucket and went to the well.

There was only a little water at the bottom.

We used it carefully for the flower plants.

Then one evening a big black cloud came over the hills.

The rain fell all night.

In the morning the well was full again.

Talk about it

  1. Why was the well nearly dry?
  2. What did they use the last water for?
  3. What happened in the night?

2. The Temple Lamp

New words: temple, oil-lamp, moon

On Poya day my grandmother took me to the temple.

She carried a white flower in her hand.

I carried a small oil lamp.

There were many people there.

An old man gave us a cup of tea.

My grandmother lit the oil lamp and closed her eyes.

The light was very beautiful.

We walked home when the moon came up.

Talk about it

  1. What did each of them carry?
  2. Who gave them tea?
  3. When did they walk home?

3. The Cricket Match

New words: cricket, fence

Our school had a cricket match on Saturday.

I was the last batsman.

We needed four runs to win.

The ball came very fast.

I hit it as hard as I could.

It went over the fence!

All my friends were shouting my name.

Our teacher gave me a book as a prize.

Talk about it

  1. How many runs did they need?
  2. Where did the ball go?
  3. What was the prize?

4. The Peacock

New words: paddyfield, peacock, feather, crow

Early one morning I went to the paddyfield with my uncle.

The sun was just coming up.

Suddenly we saw a peacock near the water.

It was standing very still.

Its long feathers were blue and green.

Then a crow made a loud noise.

The peacock opened its tail and ran into the trees.

My uncle said it was good luck to see one.

Talk about it

  1. Where did they go, and when?
  2. What colours were the feathers?
  3. Why did the peacock run?

5. Grandmother's Medicine

New words: hospital, doctor, medicine

My grandmother was not well last week.

She could not eat her rice.

My mother took her to the hospital by bus.

A doctor looked at her for a long time.

He gave her some medicine.

"Drink plenty of water," he said.

After three days she was much better.

She made sweets for all of us.

Talk about it

  1. How did they go to the hospital?
  2. What did the doctor say?
  3. How do we know she got better?
