What is in here
There are 43 games here across 10 themed units, about 2.7 hours of play in all, covering the ten Grade 5 themes - Sri Lanka, nature, caring and sharing, celebrations, sport, healthy living, the fair, safety, the wider world and the future.
Everything is free, needs no account, and works on a phone. There is no advertising anywhere in the Game Zone.
The games follow the themes of the Sri Lankan Pupil's Book for the grade, so a child plays the words they are meeting in class that term.
What it practises
- A, an and the, which have no equivalent in Sinhala or Tamil and are the commonest mistake in Sri Lankan English writing at every later grade.
- Talking about where you are from: province, town, country - the questions a Grade 5 child meets in the scholarship examination and in any conversation with a stranger.
- Longer sentences, built rather than chosen: fourteen of the games at this level are quizzes on meaning rather than matching on pictures.
Getting the most from it
Grade 5 is a scholarship year for many children and the temptation is to use screen time for past papers. Ten minutes of these games is still worth it: vocabulary is the one thing no amount of paper practice supplies.
